Administration Officer

Stand Against Violence (SAV) is a UK registered violence prevention and reduction charity based in the South West. Created following the murder of Lloyd Fouracre in 2005, SAV seeks to prevent further mindless violence through using Lloyd’s tragic story.

Volunteers are key to supporting this aim and this role description will give you an idea of one of the many ways you can get involved.

Administration is a key role in any organisation.  It is vital that we keep accurate records, communicate effectively with our supporters and funders and that correspondence is organised and professional.

If you have administration skills that you would like to put to use in your community or if you are looking for relevant experience to further yourself vocationally then this role could be for you.

Volunteering is a great source of experience, skill building/sharing and regular volunteering can make for an impressive reference for your CV.  All SAV volunteers are provided with a reference and certificate on request.

What could you be doing?

The key activities of this role are:

·         Managing emails on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer including responding to requests.

·         Assisting in other administrative tasks including the organising of charity events, applying for collection/stall permits and setting up new projects.

·         Managing a list of funders and contacting them when appropriate including thanking them for donations.

·         Keeping a record using Excel to manage funds received and donor details.

·         Contacting trustees to ensure they have completed necessary tasks ahead of deadlines and meetings.

·         Preparing a quarterly newsletter to be sent to SAV supporters.

What previous experience/skills do you need to have?

No previous volunteering experience is necessary and the flexible nature of this role makes this the perfect opportunity for a first-time volunteer.

This role could be for you if you are:

·         Able to use Microsoft Word and Excel.

·         Confident using a computer and communicating using email.

·         Confident using the Internet and speaking on the telephone.

·         Punctual and good at time-keeping

·         Tidy and organised

·         Confident talking to the general public.

·         A good communicator

·         Aware of the importance of confidentiality when dealing with correspondence and    communications.

·         Passionate about preventing and reducing violence.

How much of your time does this role require?

This role requires weekly commitment and the time you can give will be agreed at interview stage (although a minimum of 3 hours a week is desirable). 

In addition it is important to the reputation of the charity that all enquiries are dealt with promptly and it is vital that the time you give is as consistent as possible as we may have several volunteer administrators and a rota may need to be kept.

Trustee role

STAND AGAINST VIOLENCE, a local anti violence charity is looking for trustees. The charity focuses on anti violence education amongst young people and raising awareness of the consequences of violence.

We have 4 vacancies. Althought we are looking for people who are keen and supportive of SAV and our aims we are specifically looking for people in the following professions:

·         Magistrate

·         Youth/social worker

·         Healthcare professional - consultant, nurses or NHS management

·         Councillors and council workers (with a keen interest or appropriate background in Secondary Schools   and Education)

·         Secondary school teacher/head

Ideally we need people with connections or that are higher up in their professions. People who can use their experience and connections to further develop and enhance the charity.

All trustees need to be over 18 and the role involves the following:

• Attending regular monthly meetings usually a day in the first week of each month.
• Fundraising
• Promoting and furthering the charity and our aims
• Attending occasional events

Trustees need to be proactive and actively strive to help the charity achieve it's objectives.
All decisions are made by the board at the meetings but anything a trustee wishes to do off their own initiative can be contributed and discussed. We raise our plans at the meetings, discuss ways forward, strategies, explore possible avenues then delegate tasks for each of us to achieve. Delegation of tasks depends on peoples experience, expertise, use of contacts etc. We have a trust deed which will need reading and signing by every trustee and we must always work towards our objectives set out in this deed. Each trustee stays in post for a year and can then decide to step down with notice or continue in their position if voted back in.

AGM

The first annual general meeting of SAV was held on the 7th June marking 1 year as a charity. It was a very positive meeting and people were impressed to hear of all our good work. Hopefully next year we will have a better turn out!

Press release evaluation of SAVed Day

Stand Against Violence ran two pilot workshops on violence and its consequences in May. Seven schools from Taunton, Bridgwater, Highbridge, Minehead and Wellington attended and 80 pupils benefitted from certified first aid training, personal safety and conflict resolution classes and the violence prevention workshops run by Stand Against Violence. The day included a powerful introduction by Adam Fouracre speaking about the devastating impact of the murder of his brother Lloyd Fouracre who was beaten to death in Taunton in 2005. 

 

The SAVed project days were supported by O2, local grant making organisation Benchmark and received some funding from Taunton Deane Community Safety team and Taunton rotary club. The days proved very successful and clearly had a profound impact on the pupils. Adam Fouracre, chair of Stand Against Violence said 'the SAVed project days provide not only powerful and positive violence prevention sessions but also teaches skills that will benefit young people in their future lives.' Pupils are also awarded ASDAN credit for attending and the days are hugely beneficial to schools and pupils a like. Lynne Roberts-Mudge from Brymore School, Cannington said ‘The boys haven't stopped talking about the day, they really enjoyed it and got a huge amount from it.  They are already asking if they can go again and I have had a number of boys also asking to take part next time.’ Stand Against Violence is currently planning more workshop days following the success of the pilots expected to start from September. Adam said 'we hope to benefit many more pupils by continuing these valuable workshops and opening them up to all schools in Somerset and Bristol.'
